Brief: Full supply and install of 2 x 100kw boiler replacement and 2 x 1000 litre hot water heaters, pipework, pumps, panels at a Care Home

As this is a residential care home and the project was to be undertaken during the wintertime we were assigned with supplying and installing a temporary boiler initially. This allowed for the continuation of services for the heating. However, we had to maintain the continued water supply. We, therefore, made the decision to leave the existing units in situ. With the nature of the site, continuous hot water was imperative.

Following the installation and extensive testing of the temporary plant we removed the existing 70kw boilers from the site using a local recycling company. The pipework and controls were then modified to allow for the new boilers to be installed on a frame. We were able to liaise with the council’s controls team to assist them in fitting and integrating the new controls.

Once all parties were happy with the satisfactory running of the plant, we were able to leave the system running with the temporary plant in. This provided backup if there were any further issues.

Boiler Replacement

Due to the limited size of the plant room we had to remove the water heaters and install temporary connections within a 6-hour window. We are happy to confirm we completed it with time to spare. Over the period of the new few days, were able to modify the system to fit these units in a permanent fitting.

BOILER SYSTEM CASE STUDY – THE HOSPITAL

The boiler systems project took place in June 2020 and lasted for three weeks.

Brief: Full supply and installation of a 300kw boiler, hot water cylinders, pumps, and pipework at the Hospital.

Following several site visits to the hospital’s Plant Room to ascertain the full specification for the project we were successful in our bid. This project had a few limitations as due to the nature of being a medical facility there were issues with site attendance and welfare availability. The location is remote from any major supply hubs which posed a problem for material supplies, accommodation etc.

Removal of Old Boiler Systems

In the initial phase, we focused on safely removing the existing system. Our goal was to avoid disrupting the biomass boiler’s functionality. To ensure safe removal, extensive testing was conducted. We specifically tested the controls’ impact on the biomass controls.

The existing boiler was an ordinary open-flued boiler with a blown oil burner and was therefore no longer as efficient as a new unit. We were able to safely disconnect this unit and using lifting and skating equipment we were able to move it to a safe location ready to be recycled by a local recycling plant.

New Boiler Systems Installation

With the old boiler out of the way, our coded welders were able to amend the existing pipework to allow for the fitting of the new boiler. Once finished the new boiler was skated into place and tested to ensure there were no leaks. The flue however was a little complicated due to the old one not being suitable for the new oil condensing boiler and as such a new flue was fitting complete with additional drains etc. We were also contracted to update the boiler controls to make them more compatible with the newer biomass boiler controls.

Once satisfied that the boiler installation was correct and running as we anticipated we integrated it to run side by side with the biomass boiler.

Vented Water Calorifiers

The second part involved removing vented horizontal water calorifiers at a high level. We replaced them with new vertical 1000-litre ones. The challenge was maintaining existing supplies while minimizing disruption. Water, essential for hospital sanitization, remained the top priority.

With the small plant room, we brought in new calorifiers and fabricated copper pipework and controls.
We kept the existing ones running during the process. Once complete, we switched over with minimal utility loss and a small window of downtime.

Once the new units were in and working, we took to dismantle the existing calorifiers piece by piece.

Full supply and installation of a 300kw boiler, hot water cylinders, pumps, and pipework at the Hospital.
