Brief: All boilers need looking after. Steam Boilers can cause catastrophic incidents if not maintained. 

Whilst we are happy to quote our customers a new Steam Boiler System through our UK Boilers brand, you can increase your Steamers longevity by looking after your steam boiler system properly. If you do not treat your water, scale can build up in the boiler itself. This scale can then prevent effective heat transfer. This means that the boiler tubes absorb more heat. Then the tubes can reach a melting point, causing bulging. This is a perilous situation for a steam boiler. 

Averting disaster 

This catastrophic situation can be avoided by using a quality water treatment company. They would need to take regular samples to establish water hardness and acidity. There is a cost attached to this, and we recommend shopping around, but this is absolutely a worthwhile investment. It stands to reason that we would take care of such a valuable and potentially dangerous investment. 

Knowledge

J&U has engineers with a wealth of experience in steam. This is somewhat of a dying art. We are able to supply, advise, service and repair various aspects of your steam boiler. The financial cost and worse still the potential for injury, are strong motivators to be on top of your water treatment.

Your Boiler Installation Project

J&U Services and its engineers specialise in Boiler Installation Projects. We are able to deliver, install, and commission hot water boilers from 30kw up to 5000kw or steam boilers up to 10000kg p/h.  We are able to install units and with our transport partners and can arrange delivery if required.

One recent project required us to hiab the boiler over a wall and then skate the unit into position. Alternatively, we can work with your delivery partner to ensure minimal disruption to your or your customer’s site. 

Our most recent projects have involved installations of ICI Caldaie boilers. The Rex range of boilers proving to be a popular choice for customers. Other projects have involved, smaller, wall-hung units from Vaillant. 

Our qualified electricians can support you with your electrics. Or you can of course keep that responsibility in-house. 

Other considerations include removal of the existing boiler, ensuring all valves hold, installing the control box, and then commissioning the unit are all elements we can support with. Our team of Gas Safe accredited engineers, pipefitters, welders, and electricians are equipped to deal with as little or as much as you require us to support you with. 

We will work with the boiler supplier and gain intelligence beforehand on both the boiler being supplied to ensure the project progresses smoothly. We also encourage a site visit from us to familiarise ourselves with your site.

Non Destructive Testing for Steam Boilers is one of the services J&U Services is able to offer our customers.

Brief: Protecting your investment and eliminating down time. 

Performing Non Destructive Testing helps prevent forced shutdowns by detecting defects such as erosion, cracking, corrosion, grooving, steam impingement, and tube-support fretting that cause tube failures. Significant economic savings from routine testing through improved reliability and plant availability can be achieved. 

An NDT is a five-yearly requirement for Steam Boilers. Not to be confused with an Annual Insurance Inspection. You may choose to have an NDT prior to their Insurance Inspection. The two things are separate services.

Steam Boilers are used in food production. Brewing, manufacturing, and agricultural processes to name three. These industries won’t tolerate unplanned downtime. To put it simply – time is money. An organisation may choose to have more frequent NDTs to ensure its equipment is fit for purpose. 

As its title suggests, NDT refers to any technique used to examine damage on welded appliances and structures without compromising their integrity. NDT testing procedures are cost-effective as no damage results from the test. Therefore, organizations maintain quality standards and improve the durability of appliances by employing these techniques. By implementing NDT, organizations ensure they identify and address potential damage to welded appliances and structures. This leads to enhanced longevity and reliability. Part of the NDT tests is by using Ultrasonic.

An overview

J&U Services Ltd is a Limited Company that operates as a group of brands. J&U is also the brand name for Mechanical Engineering projects. Including preparation for Statutory Insurance Inspection for Steam Boiler Systems. Nationwide Boiler Hire provides boiler hire across the UK, Gaspipes.co.uk is all things pipework and UKHVAC Supplies is the supply-only sales arm of the business.

This wasn’t always the case; J&U was started in 2007 by John James whose background is Steam and Steam Boiler Systems. John saw an opportunity to supply quality but affordable heating installation and repairs. This proved a huge success so it was decided that J&U should diversify into pipework. Again, this proved a success and John, and his team began designing containerised Plant Rooms and Boilers. These are available through Nationwide Boiler Hire for temporary solutions or through UKHVAC Supplies for purchase. 

Having said this, Steam forms a large part of our focus.

Statutory Insurance Inspection for Steam Boiler Systems

Another service J&U can provide is the preparation of your Statutory Insurance Inspection for Steam Boiler Systems. This is an annual requirement under the Pressure Systems and Safety Regulations.  Steam Boiler systems require weekly and monthly checks also.  If you have inherited Steam Boilers at your organisation but your background is hot water boilers, we can provide Steam Boiler Training through an approved partner. This training is a one-day course and acts as a precursor to the BOAS training course.  It is geared towards people with little or no experience with Steam Boilers. So if you are unsure about your daily, weekly, and monthly checks and your annual inspection, this training could be for you.

Brief: Full supply and install of 2 x 100kw boiler replacement and 2 x 1000 litre hot water heaters, pipework, pumps, panels at a Care Home

As this is a residential care home and the project was to be undertaken during the wintertime we were assigned with supplying and installing a temporary boiler initially. This allowed for the continuation of services for the heating.  However, we had to maintain the continued water supply. We, therefore, made the decision to leave the existing units in situ. With the nature of the site, continuous hot water was imperative. 

Following the installation and extensive testing of the temporary plant we removed the existing 70kw boilers from the site using a local recycling company.  The pipework and controls were then modified to allow for the new boilers to be installed on a frame.  We were able to liaise with the council’s controls team to assist them in fitting and integrating the new controls.

Once all parties were happy with the satisfactory running of the plant, we were able to leave the system running with the temporary plant in. This provided backup if there were any further issues.

Boiler Replacement

Due to the limited size of the plant room we had to remove the water heaters and install temporary connections within a 6-hour window. We are happy to confirm we completed it with time to spare.  Over the period of the new few days, were able to modify the system to fit these units in a permanent fitting.
